Halloween 2026 lands on a Saturday. That means a full day at home with costumes, parties, a front door that opens every few minutes, and a dog who is very sure every doorbell is an emergency. Pets are very much part of the celebration too: the National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend $0.92 billion on pet costumes this year.

All of that celebrating happens on top of your floors. Melted chocolate, a caramel stuck to the runner, a smear of fake blood, muddy paws after a rainy trick-or-treat loop. Here is how to deal with each one.

How Do You Get Chocolate Out of a Rug?

Let melted chocolate firm up for a few minutes, then scrape off as much as you can. Blot what is left with cool water mixed with a small amount of mild dish soap, rinse by blotting with plain water, and press dry with a towel. Chocolate contains both fat and pigment, so it may take a couple of rounds. If a brown shadow stays behind, that is when a full wash earns its keep.

How Do You Get Sticky Candy, Caramel or Gum Out of a Rug?

Do not pull at it while it is soft. Put a few ice cubes in a sealed plastic bag and hold it on the candy or gum until it hardens, then chip it off gently with a dull knife. Any sugary residue left behind dissolves with warm, soapy water and blotting. Sugar left in the fibers attracts dirt and pets, so rinse well once the spot is clean.

How Do You Remove Fake Blood or Face Paint From a Rug?

Fake blood and many face paints are made with strong dyes, so speed matters more here than with almost any other Halloween mess. Blot immediately with cool water. Water-based face paint usually lifts with water and a little soap. Cream or oil-based makeup needs dish soap to break down the oil before it will rinse out.

An honest note: some dyes are stubborn on any rug. A naturally stain-resistant rug gives you a much better head start, but no rug is completely stain-proof, and a deeply set dye may need more than one wash cycle to fade fully.

How Do You Clean Muddy Paw Prints Off a Rug?

This one runs against instinct: let the mud dry first. Wet mud smears deeper into the pile when you wipe it. Once it is dry, shake the rug out or vacuum the loose dirt, then blot any remaining mark with cool, soapy water. After a rainy Halloween night, the entryway rug usually takes the worst of it, which is exactly where a washable rug pays off.

What About Pumpkin Guts and Candle Wax?

  • Pumpkin guts: scoop up the pulp and seeds, then blot the orange residue with cool water and mild soap. Pumpkin is mostly water and fiber, so it usually comes out with patience.

  • Candle wax: harden it with an ice bag and chip it off. Skip the popular "iron and paper bag" trick on synthetic or rubber-backed rugs. Direct heat can damage synthetic fibers and the backing underneath.

What If Your Pet Has an Accident on the Rug?

Halloween is a stressful night for a lot of pets. Constant doorbells, strangers in masks and costumes, and a house full of new smells can lead to accidents, even from a well-trained dog. Blot up as much as possible, rinse the spot by blotting with cool water, then wash the rug following its care instructions. Washing the whole rug, rather than only the surface, is what deals with odor that soaks below the top fibers.

When Should You Just Wash the Whole Rug?

Wash the full rug when a stain covers a large area, when there is a lingering smell, or when the morning after a party leaves several small spots at once. Spot cleaning handles the surface; a wash resets the rug.

If your rug is machine washable, put it through a gentle, cold cycle and then lay it flat or hang it to dry, following our seasonal rug care guide. Always check the care label for your specific rug first.

Size matters here. Runners and smaller rugs, roughly up to 3' x 5', typically fit a standard home washing machine. Larger sizes usually need a large-capacity washer, like the ones at most laundromats. Our washable rug buying guide covers washer sizes in more detail.

Set Up a Halloween-Ready Rug Before the Doorbell Starts

A few small choices now save a lot of scrubbing on November 1:

  • Put a washable runner at the front door. It catches mud, leaves and candy wrappers before they travel further into the house. Browse our runner collection.

  • Pick a low-profile rug. You will open the front door dozens of times on Halloween night. A low-profile rug lets it swing over without catching.

  • Choose a non-slip backing. Long capes, oversized costumes and kids running to the door are a tripping combination. A TPR non-slip backing helps keep the rug in place on hardwood, tile and vinyl.

  • Go for a mid-tone pattern. Patterned and heathered rugs hide dried mud and crumbs between washes far better than solid white or very dark solids.
